Pivot Point Conducts Second Nationwide Cancer Survivor Beauty & Support Day

Pivot Point International recently conducted its second National Cancer Survivor Beauty & Support Day at its three Chicagoland Academies. In recognition of cancer survivors, the Academies provided free services on a designated day the first week of December.

Founded in 2003, by Barbara Paget of Highland Park, nationwide participation has grown steadily to 314 schools and salons participating in 39 states. A strong turnout of people received services at the three Academies in Evanston, Chicago and Bloomingdale with the Signature Facial as most requested.

The Illinois Legislature and the Congressional Proclamation has designated the first Tuesday of December as an opportunity for schools, salons, spas and the community to participate and provide survivors with a special gift, extending their support to cancer survivors throughout the country.

Stay tuned for details later in the year for our December 2010 event!

How to Conduct a Successful Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day

A Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day is an easy, yet meaningful community event held at your school, salon or spa. It involves the students and staff, who offer free beauty services to men, women and children who are cancer survivors. This day, originated by Barbara Paget of Highland Park, IL, is recognized as a coordinated cancer survivor event on the first Tuesday of December each year. This voluntary event is a great opportunity for schools, salons, spas and the community to participate and provide survivors with a special gift, extending their support to cancer survivors throughout the country.

Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day incorporates both beauty and support into one day and is a wonderful treat for cancer survivors to feel pampered. It is a fun way to get everyone involved in a community service project, increasing your exposure in the community and building new clients for your business.

Some Important Cancer Survivor Beauty & Support Day Tips

  • Two weeks prior to your event, determine the date, hours and which services will be included in this beauty and support day. Your school or salon is responsible for choosing the hours as well as the actual day to hold this event. The event is to be held in the first week of December (12/1/10 to 12/5/10) and any services that are offered for this day must be free for the cancer survivors. Each location will choose which hair, nail and skin care services it will offer to pamper men, women and children cancer survivors.
  • When booking an appointment for a cancer survivor, be sure to take the name, address and phone number. Save this information for contact purposes for next year’s event. We encourage participating schools and salons to call and confirm appointments prior to the event.
  • Download customized templates for a flyer, poster, press release and public service announcement (PSA) listed above to promote your event.
  • It would be beneficial to visit local hospitals and cancer centers to reach out to cancer survivors and promote this beauty and support day with the flyers provided on our website.
  • Submit the prepared press release to local newspapers.
  • Please keep in mind that everyone, especially a cancer survivor, has different comfort levels when discussing their health issues. It is important to respect his or her privacy and let the cancer survivor bring up any discussion regarding health issues.
  • When working with clients in treatment for cancer, it is advisable to find out whether their physician has specific recommendations relative to massage. Depending on the doctor or the prescribed course of treatment, it may be necessary to refrain from massage of any kind.
  • For the person giving the service, it is important to follow the guidelines provided by the American Cancer Society when treating breast cancer patients for a manicure to avoid infection.
  • NOTE - Keep your client’s hands and cuticles soft and moist by using moisturizing lotion or cream. Push cuticles back with a cuticle stick rather than cutting them with cuticle nippers.
